Last Thursday, 03rd December our CEO Barry Murphy & Account Manager Dylan Kelly attended The Student Accommodation Conference in London. This annual event took place in the fantastic surroundings of Bishopsgate which featured leading experts, investors and service providers in the Student Accommodation Sector. Now into it’s 8th year, the conference has become an event which offers high level networking opportunities with leading players in the sector.
Organised by Property Week, the Student Accommodation conference provides a thorough analysis of Student Housing as an international investment class, looking at the key issues in the UK, European and International Markets.
Some of the key points taken from the event included:
- An opening keynote from Sir Tim Wilson where he discussed the findings of his most recent report into University-Industry Collaboration and the opportunities for collaboration within the Student Accommodation sector.
- Speakers such as Rt Hon Charles Clarke who offered attendee’s a Policy Perspectives or Melanie Leech, Chief Executive of the British Property Foundation who looked at the PBSA Perspectives.
- A number of panels in which various topics such as “Planning and Placemaking for the Private Sector” or “International Student Expectations” were debated and discussed
- A key theme of International Students is rapidly becoming prevalent throughout the sector with the conference closing remarks taking particular focus on examining the European Hotspots and looking at potential yield returns one can expect.
The conference showed the increasing number of investors and developers who are looking at the student accommodation Market. The event’s continued growth mirrors the incredibly exciting times for the sector, which is rapidly maturing into a mainstream asset class. But there are also challenges ahead which were acknowledged by the day’s speakers which could stifle the market.
Dylans thoughts on the conference:
I had been in contact with many of the clients at the event but never had the chance to meet them in person. The networking opportunities are one of the main reasons this conference works so well. Not only do I get to meet with potential clients, I also get to catch up with my own clients over a coffee or beer”
Dylan Kelly, Account Manager
Barrys thoughts on the conference:
The trends and ways the sector is going is very interesting and it is definitely a time to get excited about Student Accommodation globally. I am looking forward to next year’s event already.
Barry Murphy, CEO
